About This Particular Web Site
80’s Cartoons Alliance
Transformers, GoBots, G.I. Joe, MASK—it’s all here!
Do you remember cartoons like She-Ra, Robotech, Kidd Video, Galaxy High School, and Lazer Tag Academy? Well, you probably do if you watched any Saturday morning cartoons during the 80s. On the 80’s Cartoons Alliance site you can look up information on cartoons shown throughout that decade. You might notice that many of the cartoons are marketing ploys to get you to buy more Pound Puppies and to play Donkey Kong. Go figure.
MacDesktops.com
Web: http://www.macdesktops.com/
Mac evangelism on your desktop.
In my never-ending quest to find the best site for desktop wallpaper, I ran into macdesktops.com. If you’re looking for wallpaper that reflects your love of the Macintosh, this is a definite bookmark! There’s a wide assortment of desktop themes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to wallpapers matching the color of your Mac. Many of the wallpapers promote Macs in one way or another—like HAL the killer computer in Bondi blue! For more on desktop pictures, see this month’s GUI Junkie.
Candystand
Web: http://www.candystand.com/
A cornucopia of fun games.
My coworkers are spending more time at their computers these days because of this Web site! Utilizing Macromedia’s Shockwave, Candystand brings more Internet games to your desktop than there are packets of gum at the convenience store. By the way, the site is sponsored by LifeSavers. The whole site (including games) is shamelessly laden with ads for all kinds of bubble gums and breath mints—all under the LifeSavers banner.
Perhaps the most popular game on the site is the 18-hole putt-putt course. Up to four people can play and control the putter with a mouse. Other games include basketball and pool. You’ll have hours of fun and end up with a mysterious hankering for some gummi-savers.
Find The Black Dot
Web: http://udel.edu/%7Ejgephart/fun2.htm
Get ready to be cross-eyed!
Just go to this site and try to find the black dot. Go on, I dare ya! No matter what you try to do, you’ll never be able to find it, but it will always be just out of visual sight.
Here’s the deal—at this Web site is a black box with a grayish grid overlaid on it. At the points where horizontal lines meet with vertical lines, there are dots. Whatever dot your eyes are focused on is always white, and black dots seem to be just outside your focus. Look toward those black dots and they become white. It’s totally confusing and totally cool!
Evil Overlord
Web: http://www.eviloverlord.com/
Planning Your Future, One Step at a Time.
The evil villains in movies always lose. Even with mega-doomsday weapons and legions of loyal followers at their disposal, something goes terribly wrong, and they are defeated. Taking lessons from past failures, the Evil Overlord List is a compilation of things that a supervillain shouldn’t do when trying to conquer the universe.
Movie Comments.com
Web: http://www.moviecomments.com/
Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down? You decide.
I don’t like and don’t trust any of the commercial movie critics. Movie houses make every effort to buy good reviews out of them. The only reviewers I trust are my friends. MovieComments.com is like having a bunch of friends going out and reviewing all the latest movies. Anyone can join and submit a review, complete with a scale from 1 to 10.
Greater Good
Web: http://www.greatergood.com
Shop for what you need. Support what you believe.
Lots of us shop online these days. At GreaterGood.com, you can shop at many of the big-name online stores and have a portion of the proceeds go toward a charitable organization. As a matter of fact, you can choose exactly which charity you want to receive the proceeds, and you can even select local charities. If you shop online, you’ve probably already purchased something from one of the participating retailers—there are too many to list here.
